The next morning, I went through my usual morning routine of cereal, coffee, and internet surfing. Danielle sat across from me with the newspaper. She was the only person I knew under fifty who read a newspaper on actual paper. I much preferred my iPad.
I idly checked Samâs Facebook page as I sipped my coffee. When I saw the screen, my breath caught in my throat. Instead of the usual wall posts, I saw the generic message âSam only shares some information publicly.â
âWhat the hell?â I said, tapping the screen again. I logged out and logged back in, but I still couldnât see a thing.
âWhatâs wrong?â Danielle asked around her bite of toast.
âI think Sam just unfriended me,â I said. I tapped the screen again, harder this timeâas if banging the screen would somehow shake his posts loose.
âOh well, his loss,â she said with a shrug.
His loss? No, it was all mine. Sam was the perfect man. I wasâ¦only me. I needed him in my life. I couldnât be whole without him. I simply couldnât. He was The One. Without him, Iâd never be in love again. Iâd be lonely for the rest of my life. It wouldâve seemed overdramatic if it werenât the absolute truth.
âMaybe you can send him a friend request for me?â
âHuh?â
âIf he automatically accepts friend requests, and I think he does, maybe you could check on him for me every so often and let me know what heâs up to? I promise it wonât be every day or anything like that. Iââ
âOh, hell no,â Danielle said. âIâm not going to help you stalk Sam.â
âStalking? You make me sound like Iâm crazy.â
âYouâre not crazy,â she said, âbut I can tell you have it bad for Sam. You have to let him go. This isnât good for you. Iâm worried about you.â
âIâm fine,â I said. âItâs not what you think. I mean, yeah, I want to get him back, butââ
âBut nothing. Do stuff for yourself. Not for him, and not for any other guy. Only for you.â
I exhaled so the pressure in my head wouldnât explode my skull. Danielle probably thought she was being helpful, but she could afford to be complacent. Sheâd already snagged her guy.
I turned on my heel and stomped to my bedroom. Once I was safely ensconced, I cocooned myself in an afghan my mom had made for me in college. The word âstalkerâ echoed in my head. I was not a stalker. Look at the stalkers in movies. That woman in Fatal Attraction boiled a pet bunny, and other crazy chicks hurt themselves or others in their quests to get a guyâs attention. What were they thinking? Why would anyone want to hurt someone they claimed they loved? It made no sense.
I loved Sam. I would never, ever do anything to hurt him. I couldnât even imagine threatening him or Momo or anyone else he loved. His happiness meant everything to me. All I wanted was to show him how devoted I was. I wanted him to give me another chance.
